Type 83 has a range of 20 miles. It is a low power valve set designed for use either as a W/T or R/T transmitter. The complete set, with the exception of the generator and automatic starter, is secured to a metal framework which also supports an inclined board on which the receiving instruments are mounted. 'Sorbo' rubber pads are used to support the transmitter as a protection against vibration and shock of gun-fire. This is one of the several sets which had a 'listen through' facility when using ICW allowing ships to "break-in" on transmissions.
This set is capable of being keyed (ICW) from the main W/T office, or for R/T, to have two microphones connected, one in the W/T Office and one on the bridge of the ship. The W/T operator has a control box on which is a switch marked "RC-OP" meaning 'Remote Control-Operator'. Further, each position has a R/T-Local switch. If, say, the bridge wanted to talk on the set, the W/T operator would select 'RC' and the bridge operator would set his switch to R/T thereby denying the W/T operator the use of the set. Both position can talk to each other over a battery dry-pack powered internal circuit, by each position switching to their 'local' modes. |
